Mary Bowen, in her youth a comedienne in stand-up and musical comedy, is a Pilates Elder who is one of the five remaining Pilates teachers who studied with Joe and Clara. She has been practicing the Pilates Method for 47 years, teaching it for 31 years. She opened a studio in Northampton, Mass. in l975 called Your Own Gym (the longest standing Pilates Studio in New England). Later she opened her second studio in Killingworth, Ct., her main home base, calling it Sherwood Studio. Since 1970 Mary has been a practicing Jungian psychoanalyst as well. In her words, "I had a parallel professional life for years, psychoanalyst in NYC, Ct & Mass and Pilates teacher in Mass & Ct weekly. Little by little the psychoanalyst integrated with the Pilates teacher making me known now for Pilates Plus Psyche, helping clients and teachers to better address and care for the whole person, both the conscious and the unconscious.
